SUMMARY:Paradoxical Submission – Symbolic Violence. Literary and Cultural-Sociological Perspectives on Bourdieu’s "Masculine Domination"
DESCRIPTION:Workshop\, 26–28 November 2026\, University of Vienna\, Schreyvogelsaal (Hofburg)\nConvenors: Louise-Marie Jandl\, Lydia Rammerstorfer\, Norbert Christian Wolf (all University of Vienna)\nKeynote: Gisèle Sapiro (Paris) \nIn Masculine Domination (1998)\, Pierre Bourdieu analyzes the gender order as a paradigmatic model of social dominance. Its effectiveness\, he argues\, rests on hidden mechanisms of symbolic violence – a subtle\, culturally mediated form of power that inscribes itself deeply into the social world and the habitus. This “gentle\, invisible violence\, unnoticed by its victims” (Bourdieu 2021\, 8) manifests\, for instance\, in the dichotomous allocation of gendered spaces\, in the constant “being perceived” (Bourdieu 2021\, 117) of the sexualized female body\, and in the marginalization of women in science and the arts. The often unresisting transmission of this “masculine order” is\, according to Bourdieu\, grounded in the fact that it is not perceived as arbitrary but as self-evident. This “paradoxical submission” (Bourdieu 2021\, 212) contributes to the stabilization and naturalization of the existing social order as a whole – an order that\, precisely for this reason\, typically remains unquestioned and thus invisible. \nDespite its hiddenness\, it is nevertheless possible to analyze these structures and\, in a second step\, to subvert them: In his major work of literary sociology\, The Rules of Art\, Bourdieu attributes to literature a particular capacity to “unveil” social power relations\, suggesting that it may at times reveal more about the social world than certain “supposedly scientific texts” (Bourdieu 2014\, 66–67). This assumption – which emphasizes both the epistemic potential of literary texts and their specific representational force – underpins Bourdieu’s exemplary analysis of Virginia Woolf’s To the Lighthouse (see Bourdieu 2021\, 122–141)\, in which he demonstrates the analytical potential of literary procedures for making visible the concealed logic of masculine domination. A systematic engagement with the applicability of Bourdieu’s theory to the analysis of literary texts\, such as the one he himself provides\, remains to be undertaken\, as does an exploration of its potential for reflecting on power relations within the literary and cultural fields. \nThis interdisciplinary workshop takes up that task. Bringing together contributions from literary studies and sociology\, it examines the field through theoretical examples as well as case studies. The papers range from early feminist literature\, sport and gender orders in Viennese modernism\, censorship\, crises of masculinity\, and colonial power relations to current debates on the cultural sector\, social media\, and the politics of the manosphere. A publication of selected contributions as a special issue is planned. \nInterested participants are welcome – registration is not required. SUMMARY:Evolving Rhythms Conference 2027 Rhythms of Sovereignty African Diasporic Performance\, Cultural Capital\, and Self-Determination
DESCRIPTION:Evolving Rhythms 2027 invites artists\, scholars\, elders\, cultural workers\, educators\, and community practitioners to explore African\, Caribbean\, and Black diasporic performance as cultural capital — a living source of knowledge\, value\, memory\, and community authority. Building on the transnational dialogues of 2026\, this year asks how embodied performance is understood\, transmitted\, stewarded\, and enacted\, and what self-determination means when culture is treated as knowledge rather than spectacle. \nWhere cultural capital has often described how dominant groups turn culture into advantage\, Evolving Rhythms 2027 asks the inverse question: how do ACB communities reclaim cultural capital as their own? Thinking with Nkrumah\, Falola\, Hall\, and Bhabha alongside Bourdieu\, the conference holds the tension between rooted ancestral authority and the in-between spaces the diaspora navigates — the categories of diaspora and Canadian multiculturalism\, the grant frameworks of conditional recognition\, and the persistence of anti-Black racism. \nHow do African\, Caribbean\, and Black communities understand\, transmit\, and steward embodied performance as cultural capital — and how does it become a foundation for cultural authority and self-determination across the diaspora and its lands of origin? \nConference Themes\n\nCultural Capital as Knowledge — dance\, drumming\, music\, ritual\, and storytelling as systems of memory\, pedagogy\, and philosophy.\nCultural Capital as Archive — the body as a living archive; documentation\, digitalization\, biomechanics\, and embodiment as ways of holding what written records neglect.\nCultural Capital as Stewardship — ownership\, transmission\, and intergenerational care; the right of communities to teach and protect their own traditions.\nCultural Capital as Sovereignty — cultural authority\, self-definition\, policy recognition\, and self-determination.\nCultural Capital as Transnational Exchange — connections between diaspora communities and lands of origin through artists\, elders\, lineages\, and archives across North America\, Europe\, Africa\, and the Caribbean.\n\nWe Welcome\n\nAcademic papers and panels\nPractice-based and performance presentations\nWorkshops and embodied sessions\nCommunity dialogues and collaborative sessions\nFilms\, media\, and visual work\n\nProposals that move across these forms — so that ideas are both argued and embodied — are especially welcome. Submission details and deadlines are below \nAbstract submission deadline: October 31\, 2026. \nFeedback on Abstracts: November 9\, 2026. \nPlease send all abstracts and questions to ersymp@ualberta.ca \nConveners:\nEric Awuah\nProfessor Marko Zivkovic (Professor\, Department of Anthropology\, University of Alberta) \nProducing Partners:\nThe Canadian Center for African Immigrants Movements Research Society (CCAIMRS)

SUMMARY:BSA Bourdieu Study Group Annual International Conference "Rethinking Educational Inequality: Class\, Race\, and Gender through Bourdieu - Reproduction\, Resistance\, and Transformation in Unequal Times"
DESCRIPTION:The Bourdieu Study Group of the British Sociological Association invites submissions for its 2027 conference\, to be held in Manchester\, a city with a rich history of industrial transformation\, working-class politics\, migration\, and educational change. This event brings together scholars engaging with Pierre Bourdieu’s theoretical and methodological tools to understand the enduring and evolving dynamics of inequality. \nManchester provides an appropriate stage for examining Bourdieu’s enduring relevance. As a city shaped by historical and contemporary inequalities\, it offers a powerful lens through which to explore how class\, race\, and gender intersect within educational systems and everyday practices. From widening participation initiatives to persistent attainment gaps\, Manchester\, and the wider UK\, continues to reflect the complex dynamics of social reproduction and transformation that Bourdieu’s work helps us to theorise. \nMore than four decades after Distinction\, Bourdieu’s work remains central to understanding how inequalities are produced\, legitimised\, and contested. In a period marked by intensifying and persistent inequalities\, policy reform\, and global socio-political change\, education remains a key site in which power is reproduced and contested. We welcome contributions that critically engage with Bourdieu’s work to rethink how inequalities are structured\, experienced\, and challenged within and beyond education systems. \nThis year’s conference focuses on the intersections of class\, race\, and gender in education\, exploring how Bourdieusian concepts such as field\, habitus\, capital\, and symbolic power can illuminate contemporary forms of stratification\, exclusion\, and transformation across educational contexts.
