SUMMARY:Adorno und Bourdieu. Zum Verhältnis von Sozio- und Psychoanalyse
DESCRIPTION:The talk will be only in German. \nWith contributions by Christine Kirchhoff\, Frank Schultheis\, Vera King\, and Stephan Lessenich \nThe relationship between the individual and society has always been at the center of sociological reflection. While the analytical determination of this relationship is sometimes one-sided—in the sense of individual autonomy or social determination—the more theoretically productive approaches assume a complex interdependence. However\, they often remain on the surface of a semantics of “structure” and “action” without systematically incorporating the significance of the psyche. The critical theories of Bourdieu and Adorno\, on the other hand\, can be considered more advanced approaches that are particularly groundbreaking for understanding contemporary crises in the sense of a substantial intertwining of socioanalysis and psychoanalysis. \nAgainst this background\, the Institute for Social Research (IfS) and the Sigmund Freud Institute (SFI) are holding a joint evening event to explore the conceptual and methodological significance of the recourse to psychoanalysis for the sociological analyses of Adorno and Bourdieu\, and the extent to which their theoretical approaches and perspectives can be reconciled with one another. \n  \nChristine Kirchhoff is Professor of Psychoanalysis\, Subject and Cultural Theory at the International Psychoanalytic University Berlin. \nFranz Schultheis is Senior Professor of Sociology at Zeppelin University\, Friedrichshafen. \nVera King is Professor of Sociology and Psychoanalytic Social Psychology at Goethe University Frankfurt am Main and Executive Director of the Sigmund Freud Institute. \nStephan Lessenich is Professor of Social Theory and Social Research at Goethe University Frankfurt am Main and Director of the Institute for Social Research.

SUMMARY:Bourdieu-Lectures: Geschlecht – Herrschaft – Visualität
DESCRIPTION:The lectures will be only in German. \nConference announcement and Call for Contributions and Call for Workshops \nBielefeld University is hosting the Bourdieu Lectures for the first time on November 19 and 20\, 2025 in the Kunsthalle Bielefeld. The Bourdieu Lectures are a new academic event format organized in close cooperation with the Fondation Bourdieu. The aim of the conference is to systematically analyze Pierre Bourdieu’s comprehensive work\, to discuss its relevance for contemporary research and to stimulate current theoretical and methodological developments. The thematic focus of the first conference will be on the concept of gender domination\, which will be discussed both from a theoretical perspective and in the context of empirical studies. \nThe conference program will include keynotes (with Andrea Maihofer\, Tomke König and Franz Schultheis\, among others)\, panels and workshops. The conference will give young researchers the opportunity to present their work and engage in an exchange of ideas. In addition\, the accompanying exhibition in the Kunsthalle Bielefeld will open with thematically relevant photographs from Bourdieu’s ethnographic research in Algeria\, offering visual insights into his methodological approach and focusing on Bourdieu’s visual sociology\, among other things. \nBourdieu’s perspective on social gender relations has inspired intersectional gender research and contributed to empirical gender research through its connection to the perspective of power and inequality. The conference program includes contributions on the theoretical development of Bourdieu’s concepts such as symbolic violence\, habitus and doxa as well as on the empirical analysis of gender-specific power structures. \nMore informations about the conference (including the program and informations about the speaker) you can finde here: https://www.fondationbourdieu.net/bourdieu-lectures \nInvited are scholars at all career stages. Registration is free of charge via Eventbrite (please register for both days individually) . \nIf you have questions please write to: bourdieu-lectures@uni-bielefeld.de \nWe look forward to an exciting exchange at the Bourdieu-Lectures in Bielefeld!
